THE PRESENCE of moss not only detracts from the overall aesthetic appeal but can also create a slip hazard.

Luckily, if you’re on the lookout for effective yet affordable ways to banish it for good, a gardening expert has revealed how a common household essential can address the issue.

Moss flourishes in conditions that are often found in gardens – shaded, moist, or during periods of prolonged rain.

This environment, coupled with the accumulation of airborne particles like dust in the sand between paving stones, sets the stage for moss to thrive.

However, instead of spending a fortune on trying out different products, a pro has now advised to use… laundry detergent.

Steven Bell, the Managing Director of Paving Shopper, champions this method, stating: “Laundry detergent is an affordable and efficient way to tackle moss.

”The beauty of this approach is that it requires no scrubbing; nature does the heavy lifting with the help of rainfall.”

He elaborated: “Simply scatter the laundry detergent over the mossy patches when they’re dry, and let the upcoming rain wash it away.

”This method is straightforward and kind to the environment, posing no threat to the adjacent grass or plant life.”

The best part? According to the whizz, the process is designed for ease- there’s no need for a manual rinse or scrubbing, as the rain will fulfil this role.

Timing the detergent application before expected rainfall yields the best outcomes.

However, as noted by Steven, it should be noted that the action of laundry detergent on moss may not be instantaneous.

It could take several days to fully eradicate the moss. For those seeking quicker results, a concoction of laundry detergent and water sprayed directly onto the moss can expedite the process.

Following the discolouration and death of the moss, a rinse with warm water and a sweep with a stiff brush will clear the area.

“This approach is not only wallet-friendly but also gentle on the paving materials.

”Moreover, it’s a safe method for the surrounding garden areas.

”I’ve personally applied biodegradable washing powder on a large area afflicted with moss, sprinkled it across, and left it.

”Two years on, and the moss has yet to make a return,” added the guru.
